Writing Center Observations

Class Agenda 3.30

Today, Thursday 26, 2015, I went to the Writing Center to observe a tutoring session. At the beginning of the tutoring session, the tutor was very agitated as well as talking very fast. As the session went giving it calmed, the tutor was explained to a student how to develop her essay. First of all, when the tutor saw the assignment sheet, he said that he have seen this assignment sheet many times. He started explaining the student about how to develop the paper. She ended up upset and puzzled because the explication was not as she expected to be. She was not very content by coming to the session. She said that it was a wasting of time coming there.
In the second student he had a better feedback because he had done some work. The tutor was asking questions about how the assignment was. The tutor made the student explained what he wanted to say on his paper. The tutor started explained what the student was supposed to writ in his paper. The tutor was reading the essay and then he point out specific details that would help the student to develop better his final draft. The tutor is not supposed to correct grammar mistakes or changing the meaning of the words. In the session, the tutor did not do that, instead the tutor enlightened him to clear out student’s thoughts and to coordinate better his points. The student did the entire job in writing what he was in his mind at that moment. The tutor also acknowledged the student for some good words that make good connections. Unfortunately, the student also needed to polish and to clear some point that makes sense. The tutor explained to the students that he needed to better organize his paper because some ideas were mixed. The tutoring ended up 15 minutes earlier. The student was satisfied with the tutoring session.
The tutor has a well-structured high order concerns about the paper of the student at all times. The tutor explained to the student that he needed to focus on what he wrote on his thesis and from that thesis points continue analyzing on his three main paragraphs. The tutor did not focus on lower order concerns because he was more focus on analyzing the meaningful part of the paragraphs of the essay. He managed to enlighten to the student that he needed to pay attention that the sentences make senses of what the student needed to say in his writing.

Plagiarism, Lack of Concentration, and Frustrations

Class Agenda 3.25

In the videos, there was a situation where the student was texting without stopping in the tutoring session and this affects the concentration of the tutor who are explaining the techniques to write a decent paper. The frustrated student who thinks he is hatred by the professor and no willing to concentrate well about the assignment paper. The other student who writes a research paper without attributing any sources on paper to the author about the information received. The tutor should always let the student knows that cell phone are not allowed in the tutoring session. This interruption causes a lack of concentration in the tutor, and the student because they are not longer connected in the dialogue. The learning experience is vanished. The student who has the obsessiveness that the professor hated him makes his mentally vision in writing so out of this world. He will avoid his motivation and creativity to write a simple word. The lack of concentration tend to profound the limits of the learning and writing well. The lack of ascribing the sources of an article tends to punish the writer and to take him/her away from the real analysis. The point is that students should need to give credits to those authors or figures that give their opinions in their analysis paper. Students need to understand that plagiarism is totally illegal and causes terrible academic results. Students need to comprehend that anyone feels hatred toward any student. Otherwise, teachers recognize who are the good students in which teachers should give them the biggest battle ever in order to make them fell more mature, and to enable them to recognize their intellectual power. The concentration is power in the writing process. Students needs to focus when the tutoring session begins in order to understand the explication of the tutor. Tutors are the indicators that facilitates the keys toward a better composition essay because they provide support on how the student needs to fix their writing without changing words or correcting errors.

What makes a tutorial successful?

Class Agenda 3.11

A tutorial successful is when the tutor has the ability to express their explication pacifically and patiently. The tutor needs to develop a coherent voice. He needs to know how to interact with the student. The tutor is not supposed to correct grammatical errors or change the meaning of the words of the students. The tutor needs to focus in the higher order concerns which is the thesis and the development of the essay, how well the student is organized and structured. The tutor needs to explain the differ ways about writing toward an audience who does not anything so the student needs to explain with simple words the message. I wish to see that the tutor is making connections toward the final goal of the student writer. The tutor can guide the student by telling him/her that she/he needs to clarify their three main purposes about the topic and then explaining with evidences such a purpose. A good tutorial will be given the opportunity to the student to read aloud his/her paper so the student can listen to himself/herself what the paper is about, and then the student will realize what the things are supposed to be changed. A sentence should be clear to the audience. When the student read aloud the paper, the student will notice as well the grammatical errors and the meaningful part. The tutor should indicate only if the sentence makes sense otherwise the student needs to work more in that sentence by his/her own and this is what I want to observe in my tutoring observation.
